Over the past 150 years’ great battles were fought and won against infectious disease, deplorable living conditions and hazards on the road. Major progress was made, but there are still dragons to be slayed and the fiercest and most formidable, is smoking.

In this episode of RegWatch hear from tobacco control expert David Sweanor. He’s spent the last 30-years on the front lines in the battle against smoking and he thinks e-cigarettes could be one of the biggest breakthroughs ever in public health. Michael is a physician who completed his residency in Preventive Medicine at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health and trained in epidemiology for two years at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta before coming to Boston. His primary research interest is in the area of tobacco control, focusing on secondhand smoke health effects, exposure, and policies, cigarette advertising and marketing practices and their effects on youths, and evaluation of tobacco control policies and their impact on youth and adult smoking behavior. His primary teaching is in the areas of mass communication, marketing, and public health advocacy. He is co-author of a book, entitled “Marketing Public Health: Strategies to Promote Social Change,” that grew out of his teaching experience at the School. He has been active in promoting smoke-free bar and restaurant policies throughout the country and has served as an expert witness in several major tobacco litigation cases.

Ontario Delays Vaping Regulations

The hammer fell hard on vapers in 2015 as provincial governments across Canada began passing new draconian legislation intended to strictly regulate the use and sale of vapour products.

But, while glimmers of hope emerged in the final weeks of the year, with the Ontario government announcing it would delay key aspects of its new regulatory regime and British Prime Minister David Cameron acknowledging the health benefits of vaping…it’s hard to overstate the challenges facing vapers as the calendar turns to 2016.
